ST.
MICHAEL AND ALL ANGELS' CHAPTER
GRACE CHURCH, YORKTOWN
 |
All women
are invited to join the Daughters of the King for meetings and
gatherings. The Daughters of the King is an Order for women
in the Episcopal Church with Chapters in the Roman Catholic
Church and in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Daughters
are dedicated to prayer and service For Christ's Sake. |
The Order of
the Daughters of the King is organized as a religious order. The
mission of our Order is the extension of Christ's Kingdom through
Prayer, Service and Evangelism. Our members are women who are communicants
of the Episcopal Church, churches in communion with it, and churches
in the Historic Episcopate. Each Daughter makes a life-long vow
to live by the Rule of the Order which requires a spiritual discipline
of daily prayer, service and evangelism, dedicated to the spread
of Christ's Kingdom and the strengthening of the spiritual life
of her parish. Because of our vow, we refer to ourselves as an Order,
not an organization. Our bylaws prohibit us from raising funds.
The emblem
of the Order is a silver Greek Cross Fleury inscribed Magnanimiter
Crucem Sustine, the watchword of the Order, meaning "With
heart, mind and spirit uphold and bear the cross." At the base
of the cross are letters "FHS", initials for the
Motto of the Order: "For His Sake". The cross is customarily
worn on the left side over the heart, or it may be worn on a silver
chain around the neck, but it is never to be worn simply as an ornament.
Only a member in good standing may wear the cross of the Order,
which remains the property of the Order. When a member dies it may
be buried with her; otherwise it must be returned to our National
Office. The initials at the base of the cross, FHS, mean "For
His Sake". The vows we take at our installation are to uphold
a two-fold Rule of Life the Rule of Prayer and the Rule of
Service.
There are approximately
38 women who are active members of St. Michael and All Angels' Chapter
of Daughters of the King at Grace Church, Yorktown. We meet at 10:00
am on the first Tuesday morning of each month, and at 7:00 pm on
the first and third Tuesday evenings of each month. We meet in the
Parlor of the Parish Hall.
You will see
us all wearing our silver crosses as pins or on chains as a constant
reminder of our vows and as an a outward and visible sign we cannot
live without Christ in our lives. Each woman is involved in many
ministries in the Parish and the community. We maintain a confidential
prayer list, plan and carry out service projects, contribute to
the life of the congregation at the direction of our Rector and
seek to uphold and support each other in our spiritual walk.
