Christian education programs for all ages.

Children and youth are invited to join us for
Sunday school beginning at 10:20 am each Sunday morning.

NURSERY
(Infants through 4 year olds)

Nursery Attendants: Diane Garrison
Nikki Smith

Nursery care is available each Sunday during the 9:05 service and the 11:15 service and during Sunday School. We are blessed to have a mother and daughter who share the ministry of caring for the youngest members of our church. They provide a loving and nurturing atmosphere where children feel a sense of belonging.

The nursery is located in the lower level of the Parish Hall.

GODLY PLAY
(Kindergarten through second grade)

Teachers: Peggy Buchwald
Judy Dobson
Anne Markwith
Becky Fellows
Substitute: Michelle Donnelly

Godly Play is an approach to Christian formation that enables children to experience the presence of a loving God and discover how to speak the language of their Biblical faith. Children learn key texts from Scripture in an imaginative creative and meaningful way. Godly Play is based on the Montessori method, a unique approach to religious education to invite children to wonder about themselves, God and the world. By telling Biblical stories and using other creative activities, children are encouraged to seek and find answers to their faith questions.

Godly Play meets in the lower level of the Parish Hall.

SEASONS OF THE SPIRIT
(Third grade through fifth grade)

Teachers: Art Boyce
Kathy Michaels
Assistants: Andy Brownlee
Jane Giesken
Margaret Tartala

Seasons of the Spirit is an international lectionary-based curriculum that invites children to imaginatively engage scripture through activities, discussion current events, and the arts.

Seasons of the Spirit meets in Classroom 7 located in the lower level of the Parish Hall.

THE JOURNEY TO ADULTHOOD (J2A)

This program was developed over a ten year period by parishioners at St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church in Durham N.C. The information below was taken from promotional materials produced by Leader Resources, the originators of The Journey to Adulthood Program.

Christian formation is a lifelong process. The Journey to Adulthood program gives young people a firm foundation on which to build. It is divided into three phases:

  • Rite 13 (sixth and seventh grades)
  • J2A (eight and ninth grades)
  • Young Adults in Church (YAC) (tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades).

What is The Journey to Adulthood Program?

A parish program for young people which:

  • Provides a liturgical frame for their experience in our modern culture
  • Celebrates their individuality and their creative potential
  • Instructs them in the skills required for their successful adult participation in the church community and in society.

It is based on two key concepts:

  • Manhood and womanhood are gifts from God, and
  • Adulthood must be earned

The Journey to Adulthood includes in-depth exploration of the four realms of: self, sexuality, spirituality and society.

RITE 13
(Sixth and seventh grades)

Teachers: Lucinda Blackman
John & Sara Tartala
Seth Austin
Assistant: Christy Buchwald
  • Assists young people as they take the first step away from their families into their own lives
  • Includes a liturgical celebration of the gift of manhood and womanhood
  • Stress the group as a community encouraging friendship
  • Creates a safe place to explore new ideas, new interests and new abilities

Rite 13 meets on the second floor at Riverview.

JOURNEY TO ADULTHOOD
(Eight and ninth grades)

Teachers: Hugh and Donna Brownlee
Gary and Jeanne Harvey
  • Blends action and contemplation in teaching young people faithful living
  • Teaches six basic skills to prepare them for adulthood: active listening, assertion, research/information management, negotiation, partnership and leadership
  • Invites young people to make a holy pilgrimage together following the second year
  • Offers young people the opportunity for Confirmation
  • Acknowledges the young adults as equipped for new levels of responsibility

J2A meets in Classroom 8 on the lower level.

YOUNG ADULTS IN CHURCH
(Tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades)

  • Guided by adults, the young people use scripture, reason and tradition of the church to begin a lifelong pilgrimage in their faith
  • They are encouraged to take on adult responsibilities in all aspects of parish life and the community
  • They are challenged to become good stewards of their time, talent and treasure

All young people in YAC are currently serving as teachers or assistants in Sunday school classes.
